International Women's Day

International Women's Day is an international holiday held annually on March 8th. This day is celebrated globally and it celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality. It is also a principal point in the women's rights movement, bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women. The conception of International Women's day came from women’s garment workers' protest on March 8, 1857. That’s the origins of International women's day, which on 28 February, 1909 was transferred into some more serious event. It was realized by the Socialist Party of America under the name: National Women's day, and the moderator of this happening was activist Theresa Malkiel. In August 1910 the International woman’s day was organized in Denmark, and then the idea of organizing this holiday spread all over the world. The date then was not specified, so this holiday was celebrated by the end of February or early March until 1914 when the IWD was held on 8 march in Germany, and then the date was set permanently for most countries.

In our school on International Women’s Day boys give chocolates and flowers to all girls at school and women teachers. The School council is gathering together a group of boys that are saying the poem by heart

WE SUPPORT UKRAINE

As we all know in the world there are plenty of wars. Everyday some people fight for their freedom, independence, fundamental rights and let’s be honest, just for normal life. I think it’s sick that we have 22nd century and people want to make chaos, terror and cause a war where’s normally no war. It is unbelievable!

Since February 24 the Russian invasion of Ukraine has been going on all the time. It has been happening near us, the Ukraine is our neighbor country. And because of that a lot of people come to us to find a place where they can take shelter. We as a society mostly support them as much as we can. We do lots of fundraising- we collect special things such as slices, bandages, other pharmacy things, also food in cans, food to splash water, food with long expiration date, clothes, blankets and hygiene items and others. On our border with Ukraine there are lots of volunteers that help people who cross the border. Some of us welcome Ukrainians to our houses. Plus we have already welcome a lot of Ukrainians kids and teenagers in our schools. The number of them is 200.000 thousands. But also there are special buildings for the refugees. For the moment (28.03.2022) the number of people who have crossed the border between Ukraine and Poland since February 24 is 2,323 million people.

The Polish nation has experienced a lot of sad and brutal things in its history and therefore we are aware of the seriousness of the situation. We know how hard it is for our Ukrainian friends, we know that they need our help. That’s why we all help and support them in every possible way.

Last Monday to our school came 25 students from Ukraine. 15 of them went to grade from 1 to 3 and rest of them went to grade from 4 to 8. Now in school is more than 25 students. Every day to our school came someone new. They came on their first day with parents. Usually it is women. Hardly ever it is men. When there will be more Ukraine students our school could open special departament for them. But now they study in class with us. It’s hard situation, because we don’t know what we should say to them and in which language.Their language is similar to us so more teacher talking to them in polish, but slower than to us and they understand much of these words. Some teacher knew  english, ukrainian or russian so they talking to them in this language, but about this last language first they asked if it wasn’t be a problem and they said that no it wasn’t a problem for them. To these day I haven’t talking with someone from ukraine in our school. In my class now isn’t any new student  but i think it is only matter of time to moment when someone came to my class.

THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING IN POLAND

There are a few traditions connected with celebrating the first day of spring, which is on 21st March.

   The drowning of marzanna

Drowning of a Marzanna doll is a very old tradition in Poland. Marzanna or Morana was a Slavic goddess which represented death and winter. The puppet was made of straw, wrapped in white linen and decorated with ribbons and beads. The tradition started by burning the straw doll and then drowning it in the river. People believed that if they drowned the doll of winter, spring would come and winter would go away in the river. Nowadays, people don't drown Marzanna anymore for environmental reasons. Since the 19th century, the tradition became a ritual game for children and teenagers. Instead of drowning away the straw doll, the groups of children may take their Marzannas for a walk and welcome spring by singing occasional songs.

Truant’s day

It is an informal celebration. The idea is that primary and secondary school students do not go to school and skip lessons to enjoy the nice spring weather. Now only a few students dare to do that.

The sunniest class contest

In our school we’ve got our own little tradition. On the first day of spring everyone has to wear something yellow. Every class collects points. The idea of this competition is to select the sunniest class as well as the queen and king of spring. At the end of the day winners are announced.

The International Theater Day

"A long time ago, a poor woodcutter lived at the edge of the forest with his second wife and two children ..." Everyone knows the story of Hansel and Gretel. This time, the 5th grade students played the roles of its heroes and narrators. The performance was a celebration of the International Theater Day. A Polish-English performance with colorful decorations and a dose of music was well received. And we are already thinking about the next venture🙂
